Fast little legs run silently from door
Toward door. They stop
Behind the dustbin. Little eyes
Must watch me where I can’t see them.
I must have noticed. He knows.
“Have I betrayed my confidence?
Is the Colony, my Comrades!
In silence found out?”
But eyes and feet and heart and desire
Have nothing to weigh such philosophic runes.
“I run!” He runs toward door
And disappears again into the night
On the other side of the lighted room.
Comrades now found out –
Or is he a loner –
The darkness bundles round about again
And he is free to run
Silently from door
Toward door
Another day.
